Contentment

March 3, 2008
Contentment lies not in what is mine but in whose I am.  When I come into a relationship with God through his Son, Jesus Christ, I understand whose I am and what I have.  Envy causes one to look horizontally - at what others have - so we are never satisfied.  Contentment invites us to look vertically - at God.  When we look in His direction, we know that He is enough.

Contentment is a matter of accepting from God’s hand what He sends and gives.  It promotes joy in spite of circumstances, looking to God, who always satisfies and never varies.  All that is needful He will supply.  He can redeem even pain and suffering that seemingly cannot be corrected.

*cited from ‘The 7 Sins of Highly Defective People’ by Rick Ezell

I’ve come to realize that the source of my unhappiness is constant discontent.  And I really mean ‘constant’ when I say it.  When I have 1, I want 2.  When I have 2, I want 10.  When I have 100, I want a million.  This attitude applies in ALL the areas of my life.  What are the consequences?  I am ungrateful to God, I lose the joy of the gift of ‘the moment’, I turn to vices that give me temporary satisfaction, I set a negative atmosphere to the people around me, and I die inside bit by bit.

Now that I’ve pinpointed the problem, I can focus on ways to overcome it.  I pray that through God, with God, and for God, I will be better at being content.
