It Feels Good to Be A “King”

March 19, 2008

Please excuse my lack of modesty, my pride, my self-righteousness…

As I look into the mirror at the end of this Lenten Journey, I had this personal reflection.
I think I’m a very goodlooking man, rather pretty ‘hot’, especially on my ‘off season’ from deep religious observance when I’m more focussed on my bodybuilding passtime.
A personal tradition of mine for the past consecutive Lents has been to offset my ‘physical’ vanity by allowing my beard to grow free. At first it is a form of self denial, I look like a dirty madman at it fairly annoys me. Then at the end of the season, exactly on the eve of Easter Sunday, I trim it off as a outward sign of renewal.
This year has been no different, but as I look in the mirror now at the end of Lent, I see a new image of ‘Beauty’.I treasure the image I look upon when I look in the mirror. It’s the image of many of those who have gone before us in their great love and imitation of ‘Christ The King’, many of them, the males anyways, wore beards, and in most of the images we see of Jesus, he himself wore a beard. I have recieved the comment from many of the faithful that I resemble a ‘Francis of Assisi’. I know it’s just a physical resemblance, but to me it’s a reminder of that great desire I hold in my heart to have this outter beauty I behold to become in me the inner beauty that all the saints have radiated from inside their souls out into their lives, they are kings. I so want holiness. Remember the song ‘Refiners Fire’, a personal favorite of mine.
It must feel good to be a king, I can’t wait to be a king, a saint.
…I don’t know, I think I’ll keep this beard this year, I think I like what I see in the mirror now more than what I see during the summer, I know I do.”It Feels Good To Be A King”

Luke 22:25-29
25Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me…
