A son asked his father, ‘Dad, will you take part in a marathon with me?’ The father, who, despite having a heart condition, says ‘Yes’.They went on to complete the marathon together. Father and son went on to join other marathons, the father always saying ‘Yes’ to his son’s request of going through the race together. One day, the son asked his father, ‘Dad, let’s join the Ironman together.’ To which, his father said ‘Yes’ too.
For those who don’t know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever. The race encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile (3.86 kilometer) ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometer) bike ride, and ending with a 26.2 mile (42.195 kilometer) marathon along the coast of the Big Island. Father and son went on to complete the race together.
Not an academy award winner, but a fun, action packed, kung fu movie. It is great to see Jackie Chan and Jet Li do a movie together. Here’s the yahoo synopsis:
While hunting down bootleg kung-fu DVDs in a Chinatown pawnshop, Jason makes an extraordinary discovery that sends him hurtling back in time to ancient China. There, Jason is charged with a monumental task: he must free the fabled warrior the Monkey King, who has been imprisoned by the evil Jade Warlord. Jason is joined in his quest by wise kung fu master Lu Yan and a band of misfit warriors including Silent Monk. But only by learning the true precepts of kung fu can Jason hope to succeed - and find a way to get back home.

I saw this movie when it came out five or six months ago. It was a small independent film that surprised everyone in how well it did and how long it stayed around. As it turns out it is ranked #3 in yahoo’s all timetop movies, because of it’s popularity. I suspect it will be out on DVD soon, if not already. If you didn’t see it when it was in the theatres, I highly recommend you rent it or buy it. It is very good. Here’s yahoo’s overview:
Nina, a young, unmarried waitress at a Mexican restaurant, finds herself pregnant and without work after coming in late several days because of morning sickness. Jose, the restaurant’s chef, is taken by Nina’s plight and becomes her sole confidant. Jose helps her walk through her decision on what to do with her pregnancy. In the process, he bears secrets from his own mysterious past, which reveal his tenderness and passion for her and the child she is carrying.
Okay, a little humor for your day. All I can say is that sometimes we do what we shouldn’t, and sometimes we take delight in it. We always pay the price. In this case, it is innocent enough.
I received my commencement handbook in the mail today. I can’t believe that it’s really happening! I’ve been talking about it for months…maybe a bit boastful about it, but hey, I worked hard for it. I just need to iron out the final details. I’m so excited.
In other news, Confirmation day is fast approaching! I’m really surprised to see how fast time as passed.
Diane Sawyer Talks to Randy Pausch and His Family Seven Months After Inspiring Lecture
By GEOFF MARTZ and SAMANTHA WENDER
April 9, 2008
What would you say if you knew you were going to die and had a chance to sum up everything that was most important to you?
That’s the hypothetical question posed to the annual speaker of a lecture series commonly known as “The Last Lecture.” But for Randy Pausch, the charismatic young professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, the question wasn’t hypothetical.
The 47-year-old father of three small children had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer — and given six months to live.
Friends and colleagues flew in from all around the country to attend his last lecture. And — almost as an afterthought — the lecture was videotaped and put on the Internet for the few people who couldn’t get there that day.
If you have a little over an hour to spare, this is a wonderful lecture that you will long remember. I don’t often take time to watch something like this, because of the length. I did some other work while I listened and watched, I was interrupted a number of times and had to put it on pause. I hope to watch it again some day, it’s that good! Don’t miss out on this one, find 30 minutes, and it will hook you for the rest.
We are too late to register and go to the upcoming WYD, but are any of the young adults interested in planning on going to the next one? The location will be announced at the end of the WYD in Sydney, Australia this July 2008. When I was in Eugene as a campus minister I was actively raising funds for the university students to go, and they are! I went to the one in Toronto and recently they were held in Rome, Italy, Cologne, Germany, Paris France, Czestochowa, Poland and Manila, Philippines.
Note: When the Catholic Church speaks of Youth, they mean ages 18-39, which is what we call young adults. World Youth Day has always been intended for the Young Adults.
The video really shows what is typical when a million people show up for Mass with the pope. In the Philippines four million decided to show up. It is an experience like no other!
Oh!
Oh yeah!
Oh yeah, let’s go!
I think this last video is my favorite. Do consider it and let me know. If we get enough interest I will take it up with our pastor and present it at a staff meeting. Even if there are only a few, the Archdiocese undoubtedly will be organizing a trip to the next one.
