The difference between a saint and a stubborn mule is that a saint is single minded and a stubborn mule is simple minded. - Fr. Denis E. O’Brien M.M.

Flying off the handle sometimes causes hammers and humans to lose their heads, as well as their effectiveness. - William Arthur Ward

Anybody can become angry, that is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way, that is not within everybody’s power, that is not easy. - Aristotle
Blessed be Thou, Lord, Who for so long hast suffered me! Amen. – Theresa of Avila

Prayer and Work… together, hand in hand. Fr. David shared this at Mass yesterday and I share it with you… ‘Pray as if everything depended on God, work as if everything depended on you.’ In parallel, imagine being on a boat with a paddle on each side, one for ‘prayer’, one for ‘work’. You need both to get somewhere. Using only one would cause you to move, but only in circles, stuck on the same spot. I read this illustration somewhere a long time ago. I close with last night’s reading,
(James 2:14-24, 26)
What good is it, my brothers and sisters,
if someone says he has faith but does not have works?
Can that faith save him?
If a brother or sister has nothing to wear
and has no food for the day,
and one of you says to them,
“Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,”
but you do not give them the necessities of the body,
what good is it?
So also faith of itself,
if it does not have works, is dead.
Indeed someone might say,
“You have faith and I have works.”
Demonstrate your faith to me without works,
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
You believe that God is one.
You do well.
Even the demons believe that and tremble.
Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works
when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?
You see that faith was active along with his works,
and faith was completed by the works.
Thus the Scripture was fulfilled that says,
Abraham believed God,
and it was credited to him as righteousness,
and he was called the friend of God.
See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
For just as a body without a spirit is dead,
so also faith without works is dead.

Inspired by the Nashville Sisters and their smiling faces (see ‘Do Not Be Afraid’), here are some reasons why we should always wear a smile…
Smile - sunshine is good for your teeth. - author unknown
Keep smiling - it makes people wonder what you’ve been up to. - au
If you would like to spoil the day for a grouch, give him a smile. - au
A smile is an inexpensive way to change your looks. - Charles Gordy
(I would even dare say ‘improve’ your looks.)
I hope you’re smiling now and thank you to all who’ve put a smile on my face.

I’ve been looking everywhere for a reflection for Holy Week that is on a happier note… my bouquet of flowers. In Jesus’ words, ‘do not look gloomy’ (Matthew 6:16). And then I found this quote:
The cross is not pain, or annoyance, or bitterness.
It is the holy wood on which Jesus Christ triumphs…
and where we triumph too,
when we receive what He sends us
with cheerful and generous heart.
- St. Josemaria Escriva

…To my beloved brothers and sisters of the SDYM Confirmation Team,…to all the Fathers of our beloved St. Dominic Parish…(Although this act in itself assuredly stems from my pride, I rebel against better judgement for I am sick and in need of God’s purging fire of darkness) Read the rest of this entry »
